 The Anthracite
Coal revolution beginning in the mid 1700’s
provided an assortment of industrial advances in the United States,
beginning with the Colonial iron industry, followed by the steel
mills and electric power plants. Anthracite coal was first discovered
in America back between 1750 and 1755.
Pennsylvania is
one of the largest coal producing states.
Anthracite
coal mining takes place in several Pennsylvania counties, including
Schuylkill county, Carbon county, Luzerne county, Northumberland
county, Lackawanna county, Columbia county, Dauphin county, and Sullivan
county. United States anthracite coal comes almost entirely from
eastern Pennsylvania, which holds about 7 billion tons of mineable
anthracite coal reserves!
Anthracite
coal mining industry's safety
record has drastically
improved over the years, due to advanced safety training and inspections.
They have improved so much, in fact, that anthracite coal mining
safety is about equal to agriculture and construction industries.
After the anthracite
coal has been completely removed from an area, reclamation
of the land begins. The rock and dirt that was removed from the mine site is
returned and smoothed over the area. Then top soil is added, seeded and fertilized.
Soon the land is restored to a condition that is ready for other beneficial usages.
For anthracite
coal to be used efficiently and effectively, it is necessary that
the coal be supplied in pieces as nearly uniform in size as possible. READING
