Reading Anthracite Company Leads Campaign to Keep Coal in Schuylkill County Government Facilities

In April, 2008 the Schuylkill County Commissioners announced they were considering abandoning the use of coal at the County Courthouse and Prison in response to an energy proposal presented to them by Honeywell International, Inc. The Commissioners stated that the Honeywell proposal projects an annual savings of $194,485, or $3.2 million over 15 years, realized through the updating telecommunications and lighting systems and by replacing the existing coal-fired boilers with boilers fueled by natural gas.

In reaction to this announcement, Reading Anthracite Company's President Brian R. Rich has led the campaign to keep anthracite coal as the fuel source for the county's buildings and has reinforced the importance of coal and the coal industry to Schuylkill County.

Reading Anthracite Company does not expect preferential treatment for us or the industry as a whole and only wants to be judged on the merits of coal, which has a clear economic advantage. We are, however, disappointed in what appears to be a lack of support for the county's largest industry and for all of the thousands of people employed in mining and related industries.
